Hypnosis is a relaxation technique normally done with the help of another person, usually a hypnotherapist, or else with the help of a CD or DVD on hypnosis. Alternatively, it can be done by the individual themselves if they have learned the techniques of self hypnosis.

Learning hypnosis can be done in a variety of ways, depending on the level of expertise that the individual wants to achieve. If the hypnosis is only wanted for self use, then individuals can use CDs or DVDs to help with the various techniques. It is important, however, that whatever method you choose it is from recognised and suitably qualified sources, such as professional hypnotherapists or hypnotherapy organisations. There are several organisations that help in hypnosis oversight such as the National Guild of Hypnotists or the American Hypnosis Association.

Professional Use of Hypnosis

If you are wanting to learn hypnosis for use in a therapeutic or other public setting, then you must go through proper training. For those who want to use it in a therapeutic setting, the individual must become a licensed psychologist with an emphasis in his training on hypnosis. These therapists use hypnosis as part of the therapy to help individuals stop addictive habits such as smoking, or perhaps to help patients in remembering details of trauma in order to allow them to move on past the event. Therapists who have a degree in hypnosis have passed a test that one of the professional organisations listed above have created to assure adequate knowledge and professionalism.

Stage Hypnosis

If you are wanting to learn hypnosis purely to use as part of a stage act, then please beware. Learning the basic techniques of hypnosis and using it on stage in front of an audience, hypnotizing people and then telling them to do different bizarre things may sound like fun, but when the person is brought out of the hypnotic state they usually aren’t able to remember what they just did. There are dangers to learning hypnosis for this reason because hypnosis, particularly stage hypnosis, can leave people more open to suggestion; properly trained and licensed therapists are careful never to abuse that power and know how to handle it safely.

I’m not saying to you not to learn hypnosis to use on stage shows, just be careful what you do with it and only do it once you have been properly trained by a competent person.

How to Learn Hypnosis

That said, there are websites that allow individuals to learn hypnosis online with downloads and scripts that can either be bought or are available free of charge. Many of the techniques taught when learning hypnosis involve teaching people to breathe deeply and also how to relax their body and mind, or you can also learn self hypnosis. These techniques help individuals to relieve stress and also to learn to avoid stress in the first place so that it does not adversely affect them.
